Adding Notepad to the Context Menu

If you are like me, you use notepad to view files if you have no idea what they are. Unfortunately, under normal circumstances, once you try to view a page with notepad, you will be stuck with that view until you go into the File Types and change it. Not anymore. This tip will help you add Notepad to the right click context menu in Explorer:

Run RegEdit

• HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
• *

"*" should be highlighted at this time.

• Go to the "Edit" menu and choose "New", "Key".
• Name the key: shell

"shell" should be highlighted at this time.

• Go to the "Edit" menu and choose "New", "Key".
• Name the key: open
• Click on the "open" folder.
• Double-Click the "Default" entry from the right window.
• Change the "Value data" to: &Notepad
• Click OK.

"open" should be highlighted at this time.

• Go to the "Edit" menu and choose "New", "Key".
• Name the key: command
• Click on the "command" folder.
• Double-Click the "Default" entry from the right window.
• Change the "Value data" to: Notepad.exe %1
• Click OK.

Reboot
