Preserving Your Registry
The first thing you
should do before trying any of these tips is to back up your
registry. If you manage to screw it up you'll be wishing you
had as you enjoy the funfun time of re-installing Windows95
from scratch.
The best way to back up your registry
is the following:
- Put in your Win95 cdrom.
- Then copy the CFGBACK.EXE and
CFGBACK.HLP from the OTHER\MISC\CFGBACK directory on your
Win95 cdrom into the WINDOWS directory.
- Finally run the utility to back up
your registry. This utility will also restore the backed
up registry files.
Another way is this:
- What we're going to do is to
export your registry to a file so that you have a backup
copy.
- Click Start, select Run and type
in REGEDIT.
- Click on the Registry menu, select
Export Registry File. It will prompt you with a place to
save it. The file will be about 1.5megabytes in size.
- Give it a name you'll remember. I
recommend saving it to the root directory so that you
won't lose it.
If at any time you experience strange
problems, your first step should be to:
- Run RegEdit.
- Click on the Registry menu, Select
Import Registry File.
- Select the file you made as a
backup and restore it.
