Background Information

The Beginning

A question.

And so the universe began, with two answers forming in response. Both answers with equal weight but only one could be the true answer. From these answers two forces were born: Order and Chaos, as opposite as the answers they represented. Through their conflict a third force arose, that of Balance, for as man may weigh two stones to see which is heavier, so too must there be a way to determine which answer has the most weight when the judgement is rendered.

In the beginning, the contest between Order and Chaos raged unchecked across space, time and dimensions mortal minds are not capable of comprehending. Galaxies created and destroyed and recreated in a nanosecond, with no more care or effort than a being might have tossing a small quantity of sand into the air.

For all their struggling, neither side gained nor lost ground against the other. For as infinite as their power might be, both Order and Chaos were too evenly matched. So it was that Balance put forth the suggestion of a contest, not of infinite forces but of chance. For what better way to decide between two equal choices, but the flip of a coin, the draw of a card, the spin of a wheel. Neither Order or Chaos would agree to something so simple as a single event, and so it was the Universe became the game board of infinity.

The seeds of life had already been sown as a result of the uncountable time the two forces spent in combat. Already beings were looking toward the heavens in askance with the question "Why are we here?" whispering through their minds. As any game of chance has rules, so did the forces agree that no longer could they act directly against one another, but only through these lesser beings could the game be played. It was decided that each force must choose a race that would represent them in this contest.

Throughout the universe, they searched until they came upon a race of beings whose natural longevity and extreme intelligence far exceeded that of any others, allowing them to comprehend the awesome responsibility that would be lain at their feet. These beings called themselves Dragons. From the Dragons, Order and Chaos choose their champions: Order, the Dragons of Gem; and Chaos, the Dragons of Stone.

No evidence still exists to give an idea of just how long ago this cosmic game began, some speculate it is only thousands of years, others feel firmly that it is millions of years, but in the scale of the universe it could just as easily have been a billion or more years ago. What scientists, historians, and theologians agree on is the Dragon Quadrant is perhaps one of the most important battlegrounds in this contest. For little else could explain how tangible the influence of the Dragons has become in the affairs of the inhabitants.
